The Weekly Pool Maintenance Checklist Every Owner Should Follow
A simple, repeatable routine that keeps your water clear, your equipment healthy, and your weekend free.
Owning a pool is a luxury — keeping it pristine is a discipline. The good news: a consistent weekly routine handles roughly 90% of what your water needs to stay safe, clear, and inviting.
Start with skimming. Run a leaf net across the surface before debris has a chance to sink. Once a leaf settles to the floor, it stains, decays, and feeds algae. Catching it on the surface takes seconds.
Next, brush the walls and steps. Even a perfectly chlorinated pool grows a thin biofilm on plaster and tile. A quick brush before vacuuming lifts that film into suspension so the filter can capture it.
Test your chemistry. pH should sit between 7.4 and 7.6. Free chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm. If either drifts, correct it the same day — a 24-hour delay is the difference between a quick adjustment and a full shock treatment.
Finally, check your equipment. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets, glance at the filter pressure, and listen to the pump. Anything louder than a hum deserves a closer look.
If the checklist is more than you want to take on, our weekly pool cleaning route runs it for you on a fixed day, including throughout League City.
